Tooth Sensitivity

Dental sensitivity is sensation felt when the nerves inside the teeth are exposed to the environment. The sensation can range from irritation to intense pain.

This sensitivity can be caused by several factors, including but not limiting to, decaying teeth, exposed tooth roots and etc.

Prevention

It is important to eliminate and control factors such as plaque and improper toothbrushing techniques. When consuming fruits, fruit juices or wine, the acid in them can remove smear layers and open dentinal cavities. Brushing your teeth with an abrasive toothpaste or too hard a toothbrush may also erode the dentin surface which may open up dentinal cavities if combined with erosive agents.

One recommendation for patients is to avoid toothbrushing for at least 2 - 3 hours after consuming the above acidic food or drinks.
